Your friend has just received a cancer diagnosis. They text you: 'I've just found out. I'm scared.'
Which response is most empathic?
About This Quiz
The questions are based on Brene Brown's four elements of empathic response: perspective-taking, staying out of judgment, recognising emotion, and communicating that recognition. Each scenario is drawn from common interpersonal contexts where the empathy/sympathy distinction has practical consequences.
Some questions have nuanced answers. In particular, question 3 (written condolence) deliberately tests whether participants understand that sympathy can be the more appropriate choice in formal or less-intimate contexts. This is one of the most common misconceptions produced by the popular "empathy is always better" framing.
